Cloud computing delivers on-demand computing services, including servers, storage, databases, networking, software, analytics, and intelligence, over the internet.

Cloud computing allows users to access computing resources, such as processing power and data storage, from a third-party provider rather than maintaining physical hardware and infrastructure locally. This model provides access to a pool of configurable computing resources that can be provisioned and released with minimal management effort. Users typically pay only for the resources they consume, shifting IT expenses from capital expenditure to operational expenditure. Providers manage the underlying infrastructure, including security, maintenance, and updates, ensuring high availability and performance.

This technology matters because it offers significant operational flexibility and scalability. Organizations can quickly scale their computing resources up or down based on demand, avoiding the substantial upfront investment and ongoing maintenance costs associated with building and managing their own data centers. For instance, Netflix utilizes cloud computing services to store its vast content library, process user requests, and stream video to millions of subscribers globally. This setup allows Netflix to handle fluctuating viewer demands efficiently and reliably without owning the immense physical server infrastructure required to operate on that scale.
