How this works

YouTube automatically generates several thumbnail images for every uploaded video and hosts them at public, predictable URLs (img.youtube.com/vi/{videoId}/...). This tool simply extracts the video ID from the link you paste and loads those public images directly - no API key or server involved. Not every resolution exists for every video (older or shorter videos may lack a maximum-resolution version), so only the resolutions that actually load for the given video are shown.

One honest note about privacy

Unlike the text tools on this site, this one does talk to a server: the preview images are loaded straight from YouTube's servers, so YouTube sees the request the same way it would if you opened the thumbnail URL yourself. Nothing goes through this site, and nothing else about you or the link is stored anywhere.

When to use it

Checking what a thumbnail looks like at full size before referencing a video. Grabbing the image for a presentation slide, a reading list, a research archive, or a link preview where the platform failed to generate one. Comparing your own video's thumbnail crops across the sizes YouTube actually serves.

Limits, including the legal one

The thumbnail belongs to the creator who made it. Downloading it does not change that - using someone else's thumbnail as if it were your own is the same problem as using their video. Quoting it in commentary, reporting, or teaching is generally on solid ground; re-uploading it as your own content is not. Technically: not every video has a 1280x720 version - YouTube only generates it when the source is sharp enough, which is why older uploads often top out at 480x360.
