⏱️ Upload & Download Time Calculator

Enter the file size and your connection speed. Use your upload speed for uploads and download speed for downloads; on most home connections they are very different.

The number from a speed test or your internet plan.
Connections rarely run at full speed. 85% is a fair everyday guess.

How it is calculated

File sizes are in bytes and connection speeds in bits; one byte is eight bits. A 1 GB file is 8,000 megabits, so at 50 Mbps it takes 160 seconds at full speed. The efficiency setting allows for protocol overhead, Wi-Fi and other traffic on the line.

Why uploads feel slow

Many home connections give far less upload than download speed, sometimes a tenth. A video that downloads in a minute can take ten to upload, which is why the speed you enter should match the direction.
